• First-rate history writing, and a suspenseful page-turner even though we know how it all came out. (Spoiler alert the Allies win.) Hindley has full command of the history of the operation and of the people involved, and the pacing and thoroughness of her writing never lag. Depictions of the people involved -- Americans, Europeans, Moroccans -- amount to fully rounded portraits, but she never tries to speculate beyond the facts at her command, derived from diaries, letters, official memoirs and other documents. Descriptions of the physical surroundings and their importance are also helpful and very effective. I originally got the book because I thought it would be fun to have the actual historical context for the Bogart/Bergman movie, but in the process of reading I've gotten so caught up in the real story that it's taken complete precedence over the flick -- the history of the invasion and the ensuing battles and outcomes are thrilling even though (as I've said) we know the outcome. Wonderfully informative and energizing book, start to finish, and highly recommended.
• Having lived in 'Fedala' and worked in Casablanca in the mid-70's, and being a student of WWII, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It brought back so many personal memories of my days there and how I had blithely walked those streets without a clue of what had gone on just 30 years prior.
  The book explains, in detail, the splitting of WWII France into Nazi / Vichy Sectors, the Vichy military and governmental struggles to keep its North Africa colonies, as well as the personalities and interplay among the American, British, Spanish, German Consulates, Attaches, and Informants who were all jockeying for information, position and the upper hand. This backdrop leads on to explain how the American & British Governments sifted all the gathered intelligence and realized its need for North African seaports and bases in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Also the need for an invasion force including Eisenhower, Patton, Mark Clark and their successes and failures. This, and so-o-o-o much more fills over 400 pages of detail--all documented and thoroughly researched by the author. If you want to know all about those aspects of WWII and its contribution to the allies' overall success, then this book is for you.
• This history of the Allies’ invasion of North Africa has three parts the background, the battles, and the aftermath. You will need to exercise a bit of patience when you read the background of the story because it seems to take forever for the Allies—meaning the U.S. and Great Britain in this case—to decide on an invasion plan. I was confused by the chapters on Vichy France because there were too many characters in that story and the politics were murky. Were the leaders of Vichy Frances collaborators with the Nazis or just loyalists trying to save their country in any way possible? But when the author finally gets to the invasion and subsequent battles, this book gets really fascinating. She weaves together the military matters and the fascinating characters involved, like the superstar Josephine Baker, the Freud family in exile in Casablanca, and William Donovan, who created the OSS, progenitor of the CIA. The story of Operation Torch is particularly interesting because it was the first counterstrike against the Germans since they had blitzkrieged their way across Europe only to get mired down in Russia. Had Rommel been successful in North Africa and repelled, say, the attack on Algiers, he could have taken Egypt and the Suez Canal and the Nazis would have controlled the Mediterranean. But neither Rommel nor any other German leaders learned about the coming invasions—they were caught totally by surprise, and the Allies’ seizure of French North Africa was the key to the invasion of Italy. The aftermath of Operation Torch was not nearly as interesting as the battles until the final chapters that incorporate the mystique of Casablanca as reflected in the Humphrey Bogart movie, which was released before the actual invasions. All in all, Destination Casablanca is a well researched story that is brilliantly told.
• Now I know the background for one of the best movies of all time, Bogarts Casablanca. It’s all true, the intrigue, the characters, the danger, for some the ambivalence. But no one is ambivalent in this well documented and true account of this city and it’s exotic surroundings. I’m an avid reader of WWII history and prehistory and this is the most interesting, captivating and entertaining account of the events, complete with historical context and star entertainers, politicians, generals, diplomats, spies, political prisoners, leading to the American invasion of North Africa in 1942. Free and Vichy French leaders, German spies and Nazi policies, antisemitism, labor camps and prisons, the French Foreign Legion, deserters, resistance cells, Patton, Hewitt, Roosevelt, Churchill, all the major and countless less remembered players are involved in this lead up to America’s first major amphibious assault of WWII, Operation Torch. All of it is seen through the prism of mysterious Casablanca, nearby towns and villages, the desert and mountains of Morocco, Tunisia and the Mediterranean. Great read full of detailed history.
• I enjoyed this book even more than I thought I would. I'm not really a history buff but I really enjoyed the movie "Casablanca" which led me to buy this book. This book tells you what was going on before, during, and after the movie. We've all heard about Rommel and Patton. This is the story of what led up to the North Africa campaign.

"What I like the most about this book is that my initial thought of; "This will be a good read- I'll probably get a provoking thought or two out of it", turned into, "Wow. This book has literally changed my life, for the better." Since I've finished it, I recommended it to four people, two of which have acquired the book, and I even got an extra copy as a gift for a friend. I intend to read this book every couple years or so for the times I need to be reminded of what improved my life so much in the first place. This is an easy read- yet written on a sophisticated level (despite the title), and I looked forward to every bit of free time I could dedicate to reading it. There were times I laughed, got teary eyed, and most importantly said, "hmmm, I never thought of it like that before..." I recommend this book to anyone who is open to changing their mindset, and can understand irony. Obviously the title is not instructing the reader to stop taking care in interest in EVERYTHING, so if that thought never crossed your mind upon reading the title, then I suggest you read this."

• A great read. A very entertaining romp through philosophical thought by a skilled wordsmith, but I would say the age cut-off for this book is 50. Beyond 50, you've probably already learned most of the lessons in this book the hard way, however, I can see where it can be extremely helpful for a generation that spends most of its waking hours posting narcissistic selfies on their iphones. Manson gives you the blueprints to get your head out of your ass, (or out of your phone) take a hard look at yourself and the real world around you, and shed many of the illusions you've been slowly poisoning your life with. If you're a millennial, or even a disenchanted X-gen, pick up this book. It will give you at least a more healthy point of view. But, if you're over 50, you're not going to find anything new in here except entertainment.
• I've read quite a few "self-help" books in the last 30 or so years, always curious to see what the writers have to contribute. I went in with an open mind, but could barely finish this book. While there were some good points made early on (such as, we should concentrate on things that matter, like family and friends), there was little substance in about 150 pages of this 200 page book. Mr. Manson describes in detail the thoughts of several deceased persons, from Beatles drummer Pete Best to a WWII Japanese soldier, but does not reference the sources of his information. He theorizes that many of women's accusations of sexual misconduct by men are "false memories" and that men have been harmed in the process without recognizing the impact of this very real phenomenon of sexual misconduct on our culture. Regarding his account of how sometimes his wife "doesn't look great", and he suggests she change her clothes/hairstyle....just, wow. We'll see how that works out when she attains some confidence.
  I have to think that his "wildly popular" blog is followed primarily by readers much younger than Mr. Manson. When his followers mature, I think the writer would be well-suited for a job in search engine optimization. He has figured out that the most commonly searched word is f *ck.
  Unfortunately, I bought a hard copy of the book -- will likely just throw in the trash.
• What I like the most about this book is that my initial thought of; "This will be a good read- I'll probably get a provoking thought or two out of it", turned into, "Wow. This book has literally changed my life, for the better." Since I've finished it, I recommended it to four people, two of which have acquired the book, and I even got an extra copy as a gift for a friend. I intend to read this book every couple years or so for the times I need to be reminded of what improved my life so much in the first place. This is an easy read- yet written on a sophisticated level (despite the title), and I looked forward to every bit of free time I could dedicate to reading it. There were times I laughed, got teary eyed, and most importantly said, "hmmm, I never thought of it like that before..." I recommend this book to anyone who is open to changing their mindset, and can understand irony. Obviously the title is not instructing the reader to stop taking care in interest in EVERYTHING, so if that thought never crossed your mind upon reading the title, then I suggest you read this.
• As someone who has given far too many f***s about far too many things their entire life, this book was exactly the wake up call I needed. Even as a child in elementary school, I would have a miniature meltdown when I got a bad grade or if a friend was mean to me that day. As an adult, I got better at hiding these emotional upheavals and intense reactions to the world around me, but they never really went away with my maturity like I had hoped. I took to heart every disheartening news article I read and every crappy thing that happened to me at work or in school. I'd let it consume me, because I was never told to live life any other way or that controlling my reactions was even remotely possible; I thought it was just a permanent part of my personality. I always knew that it was more of a vice than a virtue, but I felt like I couldn't fully control it.
  
  Mark Manson's The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*** employs a witty use of profanity laced with satirical comedy that's bursting with philosophical wisdom. Much of Manson's inspiration originates from nihilists, Buddhists, Albert Camus, and Charles Bukowski, but he brings those philosophies into a more modern and palatable perspective. He reminds us that life is too short to react so passionately about every little thing. We have a limited emotional capacity, and we often squander it on reactions to mean-spirited people or unfortunate events, completely forgetting that, although we can't control the world around us, we can control ourselves. This book has empowered me to exercise control over my reactions.
  
  Shortly after reading this book, my husband commented at how "zen" I've become. I'm no longer angrily venting to him about all of the various ways the world upsets me. I still allow myself to feel and talk about things that bother me (I'm not aiming to achieve nirvana as a Buddhist monk), but petty things no longer have a hold on me. I let the negativity wash over me now without letting it absorb into my soul, and my life has been much more enjoyable as a result.
  
  I was so inspired by this book and its philosophy, that I wanted a permanent reminder for myself to further ensure that I use my f***s wisely from now onward. For my birthday, I got this simple, but meaningful tattoo on my right wrist. The ∞ symbol reminds me of the infinite nature of time and outer space, and the 0 on the bottom represents humanity's relevance to time and space as a whole. It can also be translated as don't make something (∞) out of nothing (0) or a reminder that there are infinite opportunities to give a f***, but that I will remain steadfast in giving 0 f***s about things that don't really matter.
  
  If you're the type of person who's struggled to keep their temper in line or if you're like me and you find yourself on an emotional roller-coaster because you take every event in the world and within your own life to heart, I strongly encourage you to read this book. If profanity is so much of a problem for you, that you can't tolerate reading the first half of this book (the last half is much less profane) you're probably too narrow-minded to have taken away any of the many philosophical benefits this book offers.

• A beautifully written saga with fascinating insights into the peasant life of China. The story is very easy to read and throws up lots of questions regarding the huge dependence small communities have on ‘what others’ think....a different take on keeping up with the Jones’s. The characters are so passionately portrayed in terms of their individual perceptions of life, that it makes one want to shake them at times. It a quick read and the style of writing suits the subject matter perfectly - I.e. simple.
  I Highly recommend this book for its portrayal of the China only an insider can communicate .
• Interesting love story and coming of age in a different culture and political environment. Also, a philosophy study.
• It did offer an insight into Chinese life but the Chinese names presented quite a barrier to keeping track of the story. I feel it was not a very good translation of the original Chinese book. I found the story rather sentimental.

• What an opportunity we readers have here. Chinese author Lu Yao had only two published works and died at the age of forty-two, but Life, this superb novella published in 1982 and still a bestseller in China, is now in English translation. It’s the early Eighties, rural China begins a slow forever change, begins to turn away from the community and culture of eons; and we meet Gao Jialin, the educated son of peasants. A sympathetic character, he’s lost his prestigious teaching job, lost face, and is in despair. Lu Yao shares only a brief span of this young man’s life with the wrenching decisions he must make between the known past and the unknown future, a story that portends China’s path from rural to urban.
  
  So very Chinese, yes, but absolutely stunning in its universality. Human beings, past, present, and forever, have acted and will act as this young man does and as those around him do. What is loss of face, but pride, hubris? Do we choose generosity of spirit or cunning ambition? Betrayal or trust? What are we but “I want”? Lu Yao’s quiet work could have played out on a stage in ancient Greece. And one of the simplest, most beautiful opening paragraphs I’ve ever read begins “On the tenth day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar, the evening sky was…”

• "Life" is a great, quick read for people looking to have a foray with Chinese Literature. The general tone of the book overall feels similar to other books that I have read from China. It reminded me quite a bit of some of Yu Hua's books such as "To Live" or "Chronicles of a Blood Merchant." It has an honest voice, which idolizes hard work and country life, but it didn't have the humor that is also present in Yu Hua's books. It has a lot of the general themes of Chinese literature too such as overbearing parents, class struggle, manual labor, and nepotism. It's quite similar to other novels written in the 20th century. I am very happy that this book was translated though because I hope that it means that Lu Yao's other book "Ordinary World" also gets translated. I currently live in China and "Ordinary World" is my best friend's favorite book and I would love to read it. "Life" was good, it just was similar to other books that I had read before. If you're a fan of the class struggle in provincial China genre, you will greatly enjoy this novel.
• I am fairly knowledgeable about Chinese history, having taught Chinese art for many years, but I think this book could be appreciated by anyone with any level of knowledge about Chinese history. It isn't a quick read, but it isn't meant to be. Think Pearl Buck's Good Earth without the orientalist problems.
  
  The story is a sort of classic one, country mouse, in this case, a young man, in the big city. But, the text is so incredibly beautiful. I was honestly surprised. Books in translation, particularly those that rely on the cadence and music of another language, can lose something in another language. I don't read Chinese, so I can't compare this to the original. But, I definitely think this is worth a read.
  
  I hope schools use this book instead of Pearl Buck or other stories about China written by a white author.

• I am seated on the floor of my small apartment contemplating how best to share my views on this book. It is a quarter to eleven and the temperature is soaring towards a steady 28 degrees Celcius.
  
  I am drinking my first cup of tea and probably the last if the temperatures spike.
  
  Reading, Life, is getting an intimate/ personal account of Gao Jialin’s life from his struggles with belonging, earning societal approval, working and most of all pursuing his dreams without the interference of any corrupt people. He exhibits bouts of anger just as he does those of joy and it makes this quite an interesting read.
  
  I love how the story begins with precision “On the tenth day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar…”
  
  There were instances where I felt that the author dwelled too much on what was going on inside Gao’s head and wished that we’d have more on those around him, to better understand his frustration and their expectations of him.
  
  However, this story will be memorable because we all struggle with fulfilling our desires and ambitions and when you read about someone who isn’t willing to back down then it leaves a mark, albeit a good one.

In order to really evaluate and review this book, one needs to have used EXCEL over some period of time. My experience using spreadsheets spans the time period from 1985 until 2010. Back in 1985, the spreadsheet program being used had been LOTUS123 and I go back to Version 1. When beginning to use this program, the first and main lesson I received had been spreadsheets is math driven by the reference location of a number [Column B Line 5] +, -, * [multiply], and / [divide] by another number. All equations used these reference locations regardless of what was being calculated,

When EXCEL took over as being the spreadsheet program of choice nothing really changed in the functionality of the program itself. I eventually started to create increasingly complex spreadsheets such as TEXT to COLUMNS where I would copy a report, paste it into EXCEL and then convert the report to a regular spreadsheet, where I had to do modifications such as deleting nonessential columns and adding columns with contained new calculations; which included complex, imbedded IF/THEN [conditional] statements.

Looking at this book, I believe it gives its readers an overall simplified introduction to spreadsheets and the formulas which get used most often. Some of the sections of this book needs to be expanded upon and written with a bit more clarity. The only way to get proficient in the use of spreadsheets and become an expert in their use is through the repetitive creation of them. Some of the terminology used by the author is different than what I know them as.

As a simplified introductory book to EXCEL, I’ve given this book 4 STARS."

• Jabbed is one of the essential books on understanding the religion of Vaccinology. It is built on "The Wilcox Conjecture"
  Irrational fear of Infectious disease + Irrational belief that vaccines safely prevent Infectious disease = Vaccine compliance.
  
  Wilcox has convincingly presented and summarised the relavent literature for a person to make informed decisions on choosing to or not to vaccinate.
  
  Unfortunately, I had not read his text before choosing to vaccinate our youngest. She suffered a catastrophic reaction after recieving the Pentacel, a 5 in one vaccine containing DTaP. Her reactions are among the numerous listed in Chapter 2; Vaccines are Safe and Effective and Other Lies. Pages 26-28
  The US National Library of Medicine catalogues adverse reactions to hundreds of diseases and disorders including Acute Flacid Paralysis;...ADD;...; Systemic Seizures;...; Vaccine-Related Retroviruses.
  
  Wilcox has especially written this text for his children in order to help them not make the same mistakes our generation has made. I post this review with the same hope.
• With so many great books available about vaccination,(J.B. Handley's "How to End the Autism Epidemic", Thomas Cowan's "Vaccines, Autoimmunity and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness", and so many others), "Jabbed" would be my first recommendation to anyone remotely interested in the truth.
• This is my favorite quote from a member of the Pharma Aristocracy "Forgive this personal comment, but I got called out at eight o'clock for an emergency call and my daughter-in-law delivered a son by C-section. Our first male heir in the line of the next generation, and I do not want that grandson to get a thimerosal containing containing vaccine until we know better what is going on. It will probably take a long time. In the meantime, and I know there are probably implications for this internationally, but in the meanwhile I think I want that grandson to only be given thimerosal-free vaccines." Dr. Dick Johnston, the meeting chairperson and Immunologist and Pediatrician for the University of Colorado School of Medicine and National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine. King Dick made this announcement about the royal prince at the CDC Simpsonwood Conference. You can find this gem on page 154. King Dick has no problem with the monkey pus, mouse brain, toxic metals being jabbed into the peasant babies, but the royal family will not participate. I love the poke in the eye writing style. Tremendous research! Thanks, Mr. Wilcox!
